Markup for apps with real underline
Only a few apps have their own underline syntax. Where they do, use it: it is cleaner, searchable and read correctly by screen readers.
How to make underlined text: type in the box above and copy the style you like. The generator puts a Unicode combining mark after every character, U+0332 (combining low line) for a plain underline, so the line is part of the text and survives pasting into apps with no underline button: Instagram captions and bios, WhatsApp, X, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube comments and usernames. The catch is that each letter gets its own short line, so how solid it looks depends on the font: some fonts leave small gaps, letters such as g, p and y can collide with the line, and in monospace fields the marks can make columns look misaligned.
How the underline text generator works
An underline in Word or Google Docs is formatting, and most social apps drop formatting when you paste. Unicode has another way: combining characters, marks with no width of their own that are drawn on the character before them. Adding one below each letter gives text that carries its own underline. Nothing is sent to a server; the styles are generated in your browser as you type.
| Style | Character added after each letter | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Underline | U+0332 combining low line | t̲e̲x̲t̲ |
| Double underline | U+0333 combining double low line | t̳e̳x̳t̳ |
| Dashed underline | U+0331 combining macron below | ṯe̱x̱ṯ |
| Wavy underline | U+0330 combining tilde below | t̰ḛx̰t̰ |
| Dotted underline | U+0323 combining dot below | ṭẹx̣ṭ |
| Double-dot underline | U+0324 combining diaeresis below | t̤e̤x̤t̤ |
The bold, italic, cursive and monospace variants first swap each letter for its look-alike in the Unicode Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, then add the underline. The combined styles stack two marks on each letter, for example the long stroke overlay (U+0336) used by the strikethrough text generator plus the low line.
Where underlined text works
Anywhere that accepts Unicode text: Instagram captions, bios and comments; WhatsApp chats and status; X posts and display names; TikTok, Facebook and YouTube; Telegram, Messenger and iMessage; Reddit; LinkedIn; game chats and usernames. Some of these have native options you should prefer when they exist: Discord underlines __like this__, Telegram has Underline in its formatting menu, and HTML has <u>. WhatsApp's formatting (bold, italic, strikethrough, monospace) has no underline, and Instagram has no formatting at all, so Unicode is the only way to underline there.
Choosing a style
- Underline is the most widely supported. Use it by default, for example to underline a word in an Instagram caption or a WhatsApp message.
- Double underline reads as stronger emphasis and its line tends to look more continuous in some fonts.
- Wavy, dotted and dashed are decorative; they are the "aesthetic" underlines people use in bios and headers.
- Bold, italic, cursive and monospace underline change the letter shapes too. They are not searchable and screen readers may not read them as words, so keep them for decoration.
- Strikethrough + underline and underline + overline stack two marks for a boxed or edited look.
Limitations
- Rendering varies. Each operating system and app draws combining marks with its own font. On some, the underline segments do not quite touch or sit lower than expected; the text is identical, only the drawing differs. Older apps may show an empty box.
- Descenders. Letters that hang below the line (g, j, p, q, y) can overlap the underline in many fonts.
- Monospace alignment. In code editors, terminals and other fixed-width fields, some programs count each mark as an extra column, so underlined lines can look out of alignment with plain ones.
- Character limits. Each mark is a character: "hello" underlined is 10 characters. The counter under the box shows both numbers.
- Search and accessibility. Underlined words are not matched by search and hashtags with marks do not work. Screen readers may read marks aloud. To get plain text back, use the strikethrough remover; it strips underlines too.
Frequently asked questions
How does the underline text generator work?
It adds a Unicode combining character after every letter, such as U+0332 (combining low line) for a single underline or U+0333 for a double underline. The underline is part of the text itself, so it survives copy and paste into apps that have no underline button.
Can I underline text on Instagram?
Instagram has no underline formatting, so Unicode underline is the only way to underline words in captions, bios and comments. Copy a style from the generator and paste it in.
Does WhatsApp have an underline option?
No. WhatsApp formatting covers bold (*text*), italic (_text_), strikethrough (~text~) and monospace, but not underline. Pasting Unicode underlined text from this generator is the workaround.
Why does the underline look broken or gappy?
Each letter carries its own short underline, and the font decides how wide and how low it is drawn. In some fonts the segments do not join, or sit on top of letters with descenders like g, p and y. Try the double or monospace style, or view the text in a different app, since the text itself is the same everywhere.
How do I remove the underline again?
Paste the text into the strikethrough remover on this site. It strips all combining marks, including underlines, and turns bold, italic or cursive letters back into normal letters.
